Fabulous Spaces: The Stylist at Home, Susie Sheffman

Take your favourite object and turn it into a room - that's exactly what Susie Sheffman did with her favourite Miu Miu belt. With it's bold chocolate brown, orange and yellow graphic tones, it provided the perfect colour scheme for Susie's home. This beautiful space has been one of my favourites since I first saw it in Canadian House and Home last year.

As the fashion director of Fashion Magazine, Susie has seen her share of fads and trends come and go, so she tries to focus on classic styles that are "modern and quintessential". The white Barcelona chair, the waterfall coffee table, the Eames lounger - to name just a few at a glance, her home is a gallery of midcentury iconic pieces all in simple, neutral tones. They provide the perfect backdrop to show off trendier styles - like the citrus hued accessories.

Of course I was immediately drawn to this home with it's all white interior (Benjamin Moore, Decorator's White), and graphic black and white Marimekko pillows. I have a similar look at home with all white and Ikea's Hedda cushions. Susie's sees the zebra print rug as 'the little black dress' of modern decor.

Susie's other inspiration for her space was one of her very favourite destinations - Palm Springs. She admits to an obsession with water and pools, you can see this reflected in the shots of aqua and of course through all the water inspired art. Above the fireplace, the photo was an outtake from a fashion shoot at a Palm Springs pool taken by friend Adam Levitt.

I love this bold, colourful statement - so simple but such a powerful way to make an impact and showcase your colour theme. This would be a very simply DIY tip to try at home.

Susie has collected this lovely rainbow of vintage glass over her trips to Palm Springs. They look so pretty sitting in the window of her dining room.I love this perfect little Miu Miu dress hung so artfully on the closet door. Of course, right next to it there's a lovely big beach photo hung in a simple gallery frame.

Black and white make a powerful statement, but in this all white bedroom with the mirrored wall behind the headboard, the simplicity of this combination is calming. A perfect place to end or begin your day.

I've been so inspired by the simple, chic style of this space. And what's best of all - it would very attainable to achieve with a selective eye and a clean, simple theme.

Modern Glamour in Black and White

{Alek from From the Right Bank has issued the "What's Your Style in One Picture challenge" - this whole space pretty much sums it up for me. If I were to pick one - perhaps the living room in number 1 and 2 or the last photo of the bedroom.}

I almost gasped in delight when I saw the cover of this month's Canadian House and Home. I was immediately captivated by the cover could not wait to see the rest of the home. I could happily move right into Jennifer Ferreira's beautiful Toronto home. This is precisely how I would see my own personal style - a classic, clean white and neutral palette with strong black accents. As an interior designer who has worked as a set designer for Martha Stewart Weddings and as a buyer for Tom Ford, her classic, glamorous style is evidenced through each detail of this space.

A beautiful mix of romantic French and mid-century modern furniture. Lots of natural light. Books, art and personal touches throughout the space - but not cluttering it.

Glamorous luxe details - the ornate gold mirror, the gilded inside of the pendant lamp.
The Hermes blanket! I love how playfully the bicycle is positioned in the corner.

The bold, graphic zebra print continues the simple black and white theme in the home study Jennifer created for herself. Someday I'd love to have a library with a ladder.

I smiled with delight when I saw this photo - I just bought the very same desk for my own little home office area. I also have a bulletin board above mine. While I do love this West Elm chair, my own desk chair is a glossy white Eiffel Eames. (See, told you I could move right in!)

The simple black trim adds a sophisticated touch to the white curtains.
I love the light flooding into this elegant yet understated space.

This bedroom is just dreamy - grey cowhide rug on the floor. Classic French furniture in white with rich pewter upholstery. Very luxurious yet comfortable. In my eyes, pretty much perfect.

Soft, Industrial Chic

When Krista Webster (pictured below) mentioned her loft was going to be House and Home, I was sure to pick up a copy - and I was delighted with what I found inside. With the help of Toronto designer Jessica Cotton, Krista has turned her modern but rather harsh, industrial looking space into something comfortable and sophisticated with a healthy dose feminine glamour.

One of my very favourite features of the loft? The amazing library style ladder (above and below), it has a industrial vintage look that blends perfectly with the loft aesthetic and the warm wood balances out the greys in the concrete and upholstery. I love the soft palette of soft pewters and lavenders. You know right away - a girl lives here! It's glamourous and feminine without being too precious.

Jessica made sure to soften some of the loft's industrial features by including full length sheers in the living room. She also did something that would leave many loft purists aghast - she painted some of the exposed duct work and drywalled over some of the exposed concrete. Jessica's philosophy? That way "the character details shine rather than overwhelm". The results - amazing!

This Barbara Barry wallpaper is such a pretty shade of mauve and the delicate pattern is set off by the chrome and mirrored accents from the bar. I love the black Jonathan Adler style lamp in the entrance (below) - Jessica's use of subtle black accents throughout the space really grounds it and stops it from looking overwhelmingly airy and neutral.

Breaking up some of these harsher details not only brings an incredible warmth to the space, but also achieves the goal of any great interior designer - to truly represent the person living in the space. This space clearly speaks quite clearly to who Krista is - a sophisticated girly-girl who's also a strong, driven career woman.
The loft has a very unique layout, with the entrance and bedroom wing on the first floor and dining and living areas upstairs opening up to a fantastic 300 sq. ft terrace which Krista often uses to host some fabulous parties.

The bedroom is the perfect retreat for Krista after a long day at work as a PR executive. The creamy, neutral palette is so peaceful. I love the soft blue pillows with the buttons - no doubt a trick Jessica picked up during her work with acclaimed Canadian designer, Sarah Richardson.

The wall of framed shopping bags in the guest bedroom is Krista's tribute to all the wonderful places she's been. "Some people collect African art, I collect bags and wallpaper," she laughs. In addition to the Barbara Barry (above), Krista scored some creamy Gucci print wallpaper on a trip to Milan that now serves as a soft accent in her bedroom.

Michael Penney, The Bargain Hunter

Speaking of the talented Michael Penney - he is this month's 'cover boy' at Canadian House and Home. A big part of Michael's genius comes from his ability to scout out bargains and with a little retro-fitting and DIY savvy, create fabulous, chic space.

I was very inspired by so many of Michael's clever ideas - like the kitchen pegboard (above). I currently like in a cute apartment with the world's smallest kitchen (trust me, I've checked) - I'm constantly trying to find ways to maximize on storage - this just might do the trick... I also love Michael's woven basket - it has inspired me to go to my mum's and steal one of hers :) - I meant borrow...

I love that he chose open cupboard spaces - with a great collection of eclectic dinnerware, why keep it all locked up inside cupboards?

Ah - the charm of a claw foot tub. The open wall mounted unit was a vintage find that Michael found and sprayed it black to anchor the space. Michael says that he chose the polka-dot shower curtain because of it's 'quirky Kate Spade vibe', I agree - it's charming.

A beautiful light filled space and indoor plants would be the perfect spot to relax on the chaise with a good book or a lovely cup of tea. The lamp (above, right) was a Value Village find.

The bold brown and white stripes pack some punch. The beautiful moulded headboard is actually made from panels of a vintage door.

Chic Chalet: the perfect holiday retreat

I was instantly smitten with this chic ski chalet in Collingwood, Ontario. Unlike many cottages that quickly become inundated with kitsch and craft, Toronto designer Michele Haber has created a clean, chic palate with lots of rustic details that stay true to it's ski chalet status.

A hint of safari chic! -I was immediately drawn to these simple black and white packages perfectly placed on a Springbok hide bench. (I've found an identical one at Pavilion, with ethically gained hides supporting villages in South Africa, it's silky soft and smooth to touch!) Talk about a statement piece, guaranteed to start conversation as your guests enter.

Simple, clean lines, dark ebonised floors and all white walls make the space clean and modern. This 'blank slate' allows for lots of thoughtful layering of interesting pieces and accessories without becoming too cluttered.

A dramatic entrance hall full of interesting layers from vintage skis to equestrian books and a personal black and white photo of a horse to kudu antlers and a Louis Vuitton blanket, there's lots of interesting detail. The silver urn below is actually a polo trophy won by one of the home's owners.

The kitchen was left very simple - deep black floors contrast sharply with creamy white ceilings, full height marble walls add an element of texture and luxury.

The dining area is a beautiful contrast of simple, rustic luxe. The reclaimed table top contrasted with shiny chrome legs perfectly complements the vintage directors chairs upholstered in simple black suede. The shiny silver balls are a beautiful accessory for the holidays that could be used any time of year really.

I loved this bedroom set up the moment I saw it - and no wonder - I have an identical lamp in my entrance console. Their shiny chrome bases tie in beautifully with the tacking on the headboard. I'm not always a huge fan of brown and white cowhide, but I love the textural element it adds here. A soft taupe throw ties it in with a black, white and grey theme.

Of course, it wouldn't be the perfect holiday retreat without a dose of holiday charm. This oversized Santa Claus from a vintage Coca-Cola ad gives you a great big 'Happy Holidays' hello!
Notice the vintage ski, which has been fashioned into a stair rail.

I think I could happily stay here until the New Year was well underway - now all we need is a little snow for skiing! (and hot chocolate for afterwards...)

A different kind of Christmas tree

I'm starting to really catch the holiday spirit, getting really excited about getting all dressed up for holiday parties, eating special holiday treats and spending some extra time with my favourite people in the world. Right now I'm typing away from my local Starbucks as we've lost the electricity in our apartment - hopefully it'll be back up and running soon enough, but for the minute I'm enjoying some beautiful holiday classics. Nat King Cole's 'The Christmas Song' has always been the first on my holiday play list - his deliciously rich voice sparks of Christmas for my every year and I'll always play it while baking or decorating for the holidays.

As I may have mentioned, I absolutely adore Christmas and love jumping wholeheartedly into all the festivities. This year, however, I'm toying with the idea of a Christmas tree alternative for our tiny apartment. While beautiful boughs and lights are a must, I'm loving some of these beautiful, smaller-scaled alternatives perfect for smaller spaces.

This simple little tree adorned with white paper doves is a elegant option - and would work beautifully with my all-white decor.
(As long as Javier doesn't decide to wreak havoc with the doves,
he's has a thing for paper lately - naughty little devil...)

Really love this beautiful little holiday gorgeous ensemble by Toronto designer Lindsay Mens - silver holiday branches + mini Christmas bulbs + a chance to show off sparkly jewels = one very glamorous little holiday vignette.
{P.S. Find this beautiful branch candelabra in Toronto at Pavilion.}

Another simple alternative - whispy thin silver reeds with sparkly silver ornaments add a bit of festive cheer to any small corner (especially with presents below :) )

A love this charming little Christmas tree, full of warm holiday wishes from loved ones. Very simple to achieve with some festive holiday ribbon + holiday cards + a few little decorations thrown in for good measure. Now I just need some holiday mail (hint...)

This is one of my favourite options - delicate branches adorned with glass ornaments in silver in gold stand out against the bright winter light. This could also be a beautiful centre piece for a holiday gathering.

I'd love to know, what are some of your holiday decorating traditions?

Warm fall florals

When it comes to flowers, far too often autumn can be neglected in favour of summer and spring, however, it boasts one of the most rich, vibrant natural spectacles imaginable. Bright, flamed coloured leaves, the grass still a lush green, beautiful wild flowers in yellow and purple, and everywhere you look sunny, potted chrysanthemums welcome us at the door. When it comes to prints and patterns, again bright florals don't always jump to mind for autumn, however,
I'm convinced that they provide the perfect dose of sunshine
to keep you warm and cheery through the winter.

Happy, friendly florals instantly cheers you up! How could you ever be unhappy in this space?

A rustic dream

I'm a little in love with this dreamy photo of Suzanne Dimma's rustic wedding at her cottage just over a week ago. I love her gorgeous lace dress and casual cardigan paired with soft curls and simple flowers. Just beautiful!
Congratulations Suzanne and Arriz and all the very best to you!
