Living Room E-Design Board
Remember when I helped Christine with her bedroom? Well she recently contacted me to help her with her Living Room. She already had the rug picked out so I tried to go off of that. This room was very budget friendly. All the pillows come from Etsy and most of the furniture is from Wal-mart.
One of my favorite parts of the room are these great bird prints.
They are only $8.99 each at art.com.
My Inner Kate Spade
Last night I decorated a table for a church dinner. I decided to channel my inner Kate Spade and pull out some stripes and polk-dots. I had so much fun making these great polka-dot ornaments.
The glitter ornament tutorial was found on Deliciously Organized. Carlee is so genius. I can't believe how fun and easy these ornaments were to make. I had one on each guest's plate.
I was also inspired by the amazing DIY table runner Christinia used on her Thanksgiving Table.
The circles took me forever to cut out but they looked so pretty on the table. Easy and cheap!
LeeAnn's Living Room
Last month I had the opportunity to help LeeAnn put a few finishing touches on her Living Room. She was so great to work with! Here is the design board I created for her.

She really loved this pillow from Be Still:
We pulled the color scheme from this pillow.
I feel like the colors we chose really warmed up the space. Here is the finished room!
LeeAnn's 16 year old daughter painted this beautiful bird. I love having meaningful art displayed in a room. It just makes the room feel that much cozier and happier.

Bloggers Give Back
My friend Jenna is teaming up with artisans and bloggers to help a family in need this Christmas. The couple in need had their home burn down and they literally left with only the clothes on their backs. Bloggers Give Back is holding an online auction and the bidding begins December 15th.
I am auctioning off an e-design service to one lucky bidder. There are so many great items up for bid and more are being added each day. So check back often and make sure you bid on December 15th!

Client Seaside-Inspired Bathroom
I just had to share this little design board I whipped up for one of my clients last month. Her powder bath is amazing and we are really doing some fun stuff in it. I went by her home last week to take a look at the progress and I am so excited!
My favorite part is the set of sea life prints. They are so beautiful and they look great with the coral prints that are going on the other wall. We're doing a little bench in some Shumacher Betwixt fabric. Eventually we want to add some textured grasscloth wallpaper. I can't wait to share the finished room when it's all done!
Client Pillows
Yesterday I got these amazing pillows for a client from Plum Cushion. The print is called California. I put them on my sofa to see how they looked and now I'm not sure if I can take them off! I love them!
Recent Design Boards
Here are a few design boards I've worked on recently.
This one was for a laundry room. The client really wanted to make this room fun and add a little more color. She loves pink and orange. The #4 is for a custom made dog bed. Pink fabric with orange lining. I love it.
This Master Bedroom was so much fun to work on. Shannon has great taste and I'm really excited to see how it turns out!
This last one was for Jessie who on the E-Design giveaway I had on Bloom. Her style was a little tricky to work with. A little vintage with a glam edge.

Colorful Living Room E-Design Board
Remember when I had my e-design giveaway? Well a couple of weeks ago I was able to send this deign board over to winner Katie. The room has great bones to start with so I'm sure it will look amazing.

Game Room Surprise!
At the beginning of last week I was helping my client pick out paint colors when she mentioned to me that she and her husband's anniversary was at the end of the week and she wanted to surprise him by giving him a music/game room. Seriously what a nice wife!
The room was being used for storage so we literally had to start from scratch. There was nothing in there but the guitars.
We had a small budget and a limited time period to pull this room off. But it turned out great!
Her husband had all these great guitars. We decided to display them on the wall. I love it when art is also functional. We stuck with simple white grommet curtains from Target.
A gallery wall displays family pictures and mementos from concerts. My client was able to score this great mid-century modern table for free! All the other shelves and accessories in the room came from Ikea.
I wanted to keep that mid-century modern vibe in the room. These chairs are from target and were an awesome deal! The table and rug are both from Ikea.
I am sure she is relieved to be done and her husband loved it!
Frequently Asked Business Questions Answered
I feel like weekly the same questions pop up in my inbox. A lot of people are venturing out into their own design businesses and there are a lot of unknowns out there for them. So I do get a lot of questions when it comes to running a business and how it all works for me.
I thought I would answer a few of the most frequently asked questions here!
1. When do you work and how do you balance it with being a mom.
This is a great question that I get a lot. As Jett has gotten older my schedule has shifted but for now I have a pretty good routine. Jett wakes up around 7:30. I let him watch cartoons while I shower and get ready. I usually read my blogs and get on Pintrest while I am drying my hair or doing my make-up. (Isn't multi-tasking great?) After I'm ready for the day I try and find fun things for Jett and I to do together. playgroups, the park, the pool, riding his bike outside, sometimes we run errands but this time is usually just our time. I try my best not to work or check emails during this time. Then from about 1-4 ish is Jett's nap. This is when the magic happens! This is when I'm at work. I bust through emails, work on client projects and write my blog posts. Nap time is very precious to me. When Jett wakes up we get ready for dinner, maybe run some more errands or just hang out with friends or family. He goes to bed around 8:30 or 9. After he goes down I get some more work done.
As far as client meetings I schedule all of those for days when my husband is home. My husband is a pilot. So this means he is gone a lot. He is also home for 3-4 full days at a time. Most of this time we are able to just spend together as a family. But every now and then I'll use this time to schedule meetings, run to fabric stores, shop for clients etc. I really try hard to minimize my time outside the home. My interns have helped with this significantly. Because of my husbands schedule I pretty much never have to get a babysitter for Jett. I'm sure everything will change once we have more kids but for now this routine works great for us.
2. How do you put together your mood boards?
I get this question all the time! I do not consider myself to be amazing at graphic design or Photo Shop but I am pretty efficient at using Power Point. I've always found it very user friendly and you can create almost anything on Power Point. Since switching to a Mac I no longer have Power Point on my computer so I use a similar program called Key Note. I do have Photo Shop on my computer but I can only use one thing on it. I use the Magic Extractor tool to remove backgrounds from images I want to pull onto my boards. When I am done with a board I simply take a screen shot of the page and it automatically turns the image into a png. file on my desktop. So there you have it!
3. Where did you get your degree and do you recommend getting a degree in Interior Design?
I started my degree at Mesa Community College in Arizona and then when we moved back to Utah I finished my degree at LDS Business College. The decision to get my degree in Interior Design was a decision I thought out carefully. Right now I feel like a degree is not necessary to become a successful designer. But then again you need to decide what "successful" means to you. For me, a stay-at-home mom/blogger/designer, a degree probably wasn't necessary. However, I wanted to get a degree in something and I wanted to go to college so it made sense for me to pursue Interior Design.
The lessons I learned in school were priceless. Not all of them have been relevant to my day-to-day business however they have been useful in feeling confident, motivated and knowledgeable about my chosen career field. I also REALLY loved school. I loved the feeling of comradely I shared with my classmates who had a passion for the same things that I did. I loved being challenged in new ways. I learned how to present and sell my ideas to a client. I took away a lot of good skills from my color theory class that make me more confident when picking color schemes and paint.
But I also studied a lot of things in school that aren't as useful to me now. I have never used AutoCAD for a client or been asked to create a tangible mood board. I rarely create floor plans. I've never created a perspective drawing for a client. I've never even had a client ask me about my degree or schooling.
So the bottom line is a degree is not necessary to become a successful Interior Designer. Some of the best designers never got a degree in design , (Kelly Wearslter for example). But I am very very glad I went to school and I would recommend it to anyone who has the time and means.
4. How do you get your clients?
I would say 80% of my clients come through my blog. There are probably about 5% from referrals and 15% from Studio 5. My blog is my #1 marketing tool which is why I spend so much time on it. I had my blog about 6 months before I started my business which was great because by the time I started my business I already had clients. Since I started my business over a year ago there has never been a time when I didn't have a steady stream of clients. I feel very blessed that this is the case. But it has also come through hard work. I work hard on my blog and I am constantly trying to get the word out about my blog and business.
If you work from home a blog is the best way that I can think of to get clients.
I hope this helped answer a few of your questions on how it all works behind the scenes!

Just Cook Already Photo Shoot
Last week I got an email from Jenna, one of the cute founders of Just Cook Already, asking if i'd be interested in styling a photo-shoot they were doing for an upcoming feature in LDS Women's Magazine.
Of course I said yes! Just Cook Already is one of my favorite places to go for great recipe ideas and beautiful images. The goal for the photo shoot was to create a fall atmosphere since the magazine was coming out in October.
I wanted the table setting to feel rich and at the same time light. I feel like the typical fall table involves lots of leaves and pine-cones and heavy colors. The flowers were a little unexpected and a good contrast against the black table.
I picked up the dishes and glasses at Anthropologie. The place mats were my favorite thing. They are from Pottery Barn and add just the right amount of texture. The flowers, runner and salt and pepper shaker are from Alice Lane Home Collection.
All of the amazing photos were taken by Meikel Reece she did a great job. This was a fun experience for me. I'll make sure to share the magazine article with you when it comes out.
The $13 Pillow That Will Change Your Life
Meet the Carmello pillow from Pottery Barn.
I'm not sure if you guys have seen this pillow but I'm obsessed with it and right now it's only $12.99!
The bad news about this pillow is that it has a poly fill insert and no zipper so I'm not sure if that can be fixed but the good news is that it's outdoor! Perfect for kids. And there are SO SO SO many fabrics and color combos that could go with this pillow.
My friend Kristen just bought two of these for her living room and we are basing her color scheme off of it.
Here are some of my favorite fabrics you could pull from this pillow.
I can't wait to show you what we do with my friend's living room!
The Beauty of Outdoor Fabric
I've been working with the greatest client who decided to spruce up her living room and eating area. She had some cream colored cushions on her dinging room chairs that had definitely seen better days. They were covered in stains. I knew that if we were going to recover them we had to do it in outdoor fabric. So I had my seamstress Erin sew up these amazing cushion covers in Calico Corners outdoor Soho Fabric.
Anything that you spill on outdoor fabric will literally bead up and fall off. Nothing is going to be soaking into these bad boys. I would totally recommend the use of outdoor fabric especially if you have young kids. It's a lifesaver.
Coral + Teal
Here is a little mood board for you created with my new favorite color combo. This pillow inspired it all.
I also thought that this fabric would make great curtains.
It's a great price at only $8.98 a yard.
This rug is so fun.
I like that we could add a pop or two of yellow into the room.
I don't know if I'll ever get over this great color combo. It's just so pretty!
A Solution for A Fireplace Problem
Last year I did a consult for Emily. She had this awkward hole above her fireplace. These are actually quite common for homes in Utah. I don't really get it. I think some of them are for televisions?
Emily wasn't really sure what to do about it. Ideally she wanted a nice mirror above the fireplace but we had a hard time finding one big enough to cover the hole.
After thinking about it for awhile we came up with this solution.
We used board and batten to cover the hole and now she has the freedom to hang whatever she would like above the fireplace. As it should be! And isn't it amazing what a fresh coat of white paint can do.
E-Design
Some of you may wonder how business has been since I started up in June. It has been going so well. I have had the chance to work on some really fun projects. Most of them will be awhile till they are completed but eventually I'll have pictures. I have really had a great time working with my e-design clients. If you look at my services you will see there are a few different options for e-design. I thought I'd show some examples and let you know what I've been working on.
E-Design Boards
This client was a cute teenage girl who wanted to add some fun to her room. We changed up her bedding, brought in orange, blue and mustard yellow, and added some fun accessories.

This client knew she wanted grey and yellow and I thought we should add some turquoise. She was super awesome to work with and I think her room is going to be amazing when it is finished.

This was my most recent project and I seriously love it. This client wanted hotel chic but I could tell she has a bit of a rustic vibe to her as well. So I mixed the two to create this really chic space. I think it's really pretty.
E-Design Questions
Sometimes clients just want help with a few things like picking colors or fabrics. In this case the client needed help space planning her basement. Drawing to scale is a skill that I use often and it really comes in handy when you're trying to figure out how pieces are going to fit. Even though it seemed nearly impossible I was able to come up with a plan that incorporated everything she needed in her basement.
E-Design Services

E-Design services include the most and will give you everything you need to move forward with your room. This client has a great eye and a really beautiful home. We worked closely together to come up with a cohesive dining and living room space. A floor plan is included in this option so you can get a feel for how everything will come together in your space.
